The time has come for the man behind curtain to chime in. While reading a preview on THIS VERY BLOG (we will not name names), I could not help but have to spout off my very own over-bloated opinions.
Please note, I am making this Jets 2010 preview based on the assumption that Darrelle Revis reports to the Jets and plays for the Jets in 2010. Looking at the Revis situation, Revis is TOTALLY F’ed if he does not play and sits out the year. Both parties will come to some agreement to get him in uniform well before they need him for a playoff run.
I have seen so many over-hyped teams come into a brand new season with Super Bowl expectations bestowed upon them only to severely disappoint and fall flat on their collective faces. It was almost as if the hype can cause the team to lose focus of the very little things that win games and make a team special. I usually call them out as a fraud and 9 out of 10 of times I am right. The 2010 Jets are going to be an exception.
For any bean baking, tea dumping, chowder swilling Bostonian, the 2010 New York Jets are the most annoying thing to come around since The Boston Beaneaters moved to Atlanta. Their precious Tom Brady and company were once the talk of the league, talk radio, ESPN and mainstream media outlets. All of a sudden a once insignificant rival has been thrust into the spotlight, that just a short time ago, their precious Pats totally dominated. There is not enough ass cream in the world to ease the chafing that the 2010 New York Jets are currently doing to the Pats fans collective asses. If you read any preview or posts from this lot you can almost hear that ear bleeding Boston accent as you read the hate and negativity spewing venom at what they are afraid the Jets are becoming.
Let me tell you why the Jets are for Real:
1) They will be better after one year with Rex
The team, under the guidance of Rex Ryan in its second year will make strides over the 2009 campaign and there is no reason to believe otherwise. All returning players know the drill and will be better with all the new systems.
2) Defense
The defense was a top defense in the league last year. There is NO REASON to think that the defense will do anything but simply get better. There are additions and a seemingly healthy Jenkins in the middle. Looking back at the 09 campaign, the defense REALLY STRUGGLED once the big man Jenkins in the middle went down. The defense eventually bounced back after a few weeks of learning how to play without him and a few losses in the process. I expect the defense to be significantly better (is that possible?) than last years D. In the event Jenkins goes down the Jets now know how to respond. Defense travels, defense wins in the playoffs, defense wins championships, {insert other defense cliche here}.
3) Running Game
Thomas Jones is gone. That is about the only negative or minus I can say about the Jets. I only see improvement everywhere else. The only issue with this negative is, it does not matter and will not be a negative. The running game will be better than last year. The running game will be more diverse and more creative. This was the #1 running game in the league last year and even though might not rank up as much numbers, due to the growth of the passing game, it will be as good or better. A great running game travels well, is great in bad conditions (think December) and is much more reliable than a timing based passing game. It is almost always there when you play on Sundays. If defense wins championships is the #1 cliche then running is her close.
4) New additions
Other previews
might blast additions of the team as insignificant. The 2010 Jets would have been better had they not added any pieces just simply by growing one more year under Rex and Sanchez having year two . But they did and in the scope of this team and the NFL, they are all good additions. For ‘other previews’ to shun the additions and insignificant, I do not understand. Cromartie, need I have to say anything? There are those out there who are now taking a microscope to the Jets to try to find flaws and fault. You will find them spewing hate about the guys personal life. Who cares? He is a good teammate and a pro bowl caliber player. With Revis on the other end, this is the best duo in football. So what if he loves banging a bunch of chicks, hates wearing protection AND refuses to pull out, I can fully understand! At least he can afford it. We forget that Edwards was a VERY late addition to the party last year. The guy can almost be considered a new addition. Edwards has a full camp, time to learn the offense, blend with the QB and the system. Santonio Holmes will be as advertised. Forget any problems about the guy, he is a player. The Jets have a very legit WR tandem that is NOW one of the better ones in the league. This is a VAST improvement over what was the worst aspect of the 2009 team. LaDanian Tomlinson, some might say he is possibly washed up and a downgrade from Jones. See #2 because this is going to end up being an upgrade in the end. I know Jason Taylor is not much of an addition and he is not brought in to be. He is a fresh pair of legs on 3rd and long and an incredible pass rusher (great dancer too and rather sexy I might add!). The Jets are not paying huge, trading big or expecting him to carry a huge load. What he will bring to an already incredible defense is a little punch from time to time AND help keep fresh other players.
5) Sanchez
The one, the only, the sexy Mark Sanchez is a very lucky guy. Rich, studly, young, toast of New York and a QB in the NFL. Playing QB for the New York Jets has to be one of the best spots for any QB in 2010 and this is not just because he wont have to be playing AGAINST the New York Jets defense (Tom, you listening???) With a STELLAR defense, running game that was #1 in the league last year, Pro Bowl caliber tight end, the addition the new WR tandem and great receiving out of the backfield, the conditions are ideal for Sanchez to have a VERY successful year and grow as a QB. I do not expect his numbers to be off the charts but he will have a great year and gain a lot of confidence. Sanchez might have come out of USC as one of the least statistically successful USC QB’s in recent years but he will end up being the best of the lot. I think he just has ‘it’ and he is in an incredible growth environment for success.
I am sure that the first time the Jets struggle, lose a game, lose badly, Sanchez has a bad day, Cromartie fathers more kids, Santonio throws a glass while high, etc. someone will be all over me in the comments. The Jets might even start off slow. Santonio is out the first 4 games, they have some tough games too. Keep in mind before you post, the season is a LONG season and he who laughs last…..
